Evaluation

Which personality traits did you choose to respond to and apply to the typeface?

deep, mysterious, humorous,

What are the reasons behind the design decisions you have made from the typeface?

I wanted to create a type face for Mitch that had a distinctively illustrative quality to it, that also relates to his personality also. the cross-hatching of the letter a re to relate to my adjective of deep and mysterious but also to relate to that Mitch likes illustration. The attempted system of the bold aspects of the lettering was to literally show the deepness of the lettering but also coupled with one of my chosen adjectives.

In what ways are the results effective?

Overall I felt the type face is legible and on the whole works as a sequence of images. although I think with further experimentation I could produce something that abides by the rules I wanted to create for my type face. the effectiveness of some letter shows though for some aspects of the work but would be more effective if it were applied throughout the entire piece.

Final Crit (15-10-10)

Issues Raised

Try lower case.
Is there set rules?
Some letter do not follow the system.
Try adding serifs.
Some letters don't work in sequence.

Action to be taken

Create lower case versions.
Create a definitive set of rules.
Follow the definitive set of rules.
Add serifs.

Alphabet Soup Crit (8-10-10)

Issues Raised-

Lot of different ideas, like a mood board

Flatten Visual Thinking Evaluation

What is being comunicated and how? (refer to final piece only)

My insperation/ starting point for this typography brief was 'flatten'. The interpritation of this word and how to translate it into something visual in order to comunicate the meaning. i wanted to comunicate the word but starting with a large out of focus photo of light in the shape of a letter, moving through the series getting shapred, less distorted, this is flattening the image. also the very fact that i hd used photography to flattern somthing that was previouly 3D worked as a method to omunicate in its self.

How well does this answer the brief? (why do you think this)

The brief set was to find a solution to the problem using the anatomy of type to explore possible outcomes. I feel that I explored text and how different aspects of type could be manipulated and used to create something visually stimulating but at the same time answering the problem set. I think that my final outcome explored many possible outcomes and placed them all together to create an effective piece
of work.

How well has your idea been visually explored? (refer to research/sketchbook?)

through research, an sketch book work I looked at different outcomes and ways of exploring the word 'flatten'. through mind mapping the word and looking at what i thought of the word, but also taking the dictionary defintion i started to scetch inicial ideas surrounding the word which quickly lead to development of the idea culminating in a final outcome.

What are the strengths of the resolution? (refer to whole body of work)

I feel one of the main strengths to my resolution is it is visually pleasing, and also interesting to look at. This hopefully strengthens the ideas behind what i am trying to comunicate through the body of work.

How could it be improved?

Although I am relativity pleased with the outcome, I feel certain aspects of the piece could have been improved upon. For example the edit on the photographs where on print not all quite the same this could have been easily rectified with more time but is still a small thing that spoiled the overall appearance of the entire set of images.
